How to Fly Safely with Your Vape: A Guide to Air Travel

Vapes have soared in popularity, but their lithium batteries pose potential risks on airplanes if not transported carefully. Recent incidents reveal vapes can ignite and cause fires when improperly packed. This raises the question – is it safe to fly with your vape?

The answer is yes, you can bring your vape on a flight. However, specific precautions are required to prevent battery issues. Follow key tips like removing batteries and using protective cases to ensure smooth, fire-free travels with your vape.

Vape Dangers: Real Concerns Backed by Airline Data

While the chances of a vape battery igniting may seem remote, evidence proves it’s a very real occurrence.

In March 2023, a fire broke out on a Spirit Airlines flight from Dallas to Orlando. The cause? A vape battery overheating in a passenger’s luggage compartment. Thankfully, the blaze was quickly extinguished by an off-duty firefighter on board. But 10 people required hospital visits afterwards.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Airlines have logged numerous vape-related episodes in recent years:

    • The Wall Street Journal identified vapes as the #1 cause of lithium battery fires on commercial airplanes.
    • IATA data shows vape misuse ranks among the top cases of unruly passenger behavior. This includes illegal vaping on planes.
    • From 2016 to 2022, FAA records reveal at least 20 separate instances of vape batteries overheating, smoking, or catching fire during flights.

These troubling events prompted the FAA to launch an awareness campaign on safe vape transport. Their advice? Follow key battery safety steps to mitigate fire risks.

Flying with Vapes 101: Carry-On Rules and Regulations

First and foremost, understand TSA policies allow vapes in carry-on bags only. Checked luggage should never contain vape devices or batteries.

Here are the key TSA rules on what you can pack:

    • Each battery cannot exceed 100 watt-hours (Wh) for lithium-ion or 2 grams of lithium for metal batteries. This info should be printed on the battery.
    • Up to 100ml of vape juice or e-liquid is allowed in carry-on. Anything above 100ml should go in checked baggage.
    • THC oils fall into a legal gray area. While TSA doesn’t search for marijuana, it can still be confiscated and get you in trouble based on destination laws.
    • CBD oil is prohibited if it contains more than 0.3% THC. Research regulations at your destination country.
    • International travelers must verify if vapes are legal in your destination. They are banned in at least 37 nations currently.

Always contact your airline for any supplemental rules about vapes in carry-on luggage before flying.

Foolproof Tips to Fly with Vapes Safely

To prevent lithium battery issues, the FAA recommends proactive steps to protect vape devices in flight:

    Remove Batteries When Possible

Taking the battery out of a vape mod eliminates the chance of accidental firing. Store batteries safely in a case.

    Use Protective Cases

Choose a sturdy case designed for vape gear to prevent breakage or battery dislodgment. Avoid cheap pouches.

    Separate Batteries from Atomizers

Keep batteries isolated from vape atomizers in your bag to stop contact fires.

    Engage Safety Locks

Lock firing buttons when the vape is packed to prevent inadvertent activation.

    Limit Loose Batteries

Only pack spare batteries needed for your trip. Loose cells have more issues.

    Inspect Insulation

Ensure battery insulators aren’t torn or damaged to stop shorts.

    No Charging In-Flight

Never plug devices into airplane USB ports. Only charge batteries when on the ground.

    Know Your Limits

Follow all TSA battery limits and liquid regulations to avoid confiscation or penalties.

    Ask Airport Staff

Unsure about anything? Consult airline representatives at the airport for assistance.

Handling Airport Security Checks with Your Vape

When passing through security, prepare for TSA staff to thoroughly inspect your vape gear. Avoid delays by following Airport Security 101:

    • Remove all vaping devices from your pockets before scanning. Having them visible speeds inspection.
    • Inform staff you are carrying vape products as you approach. This gives them a heads up to check your bag.
    • Be cooperative if agents need to examine your vape belongings closely or test for residue. This includes removing atomizers and batteries.
    • If asked, confirm your vape liquid is under the 100ml carry-on limit and doesn’t contain illegal substances.
    • Be aware TSA may request you fire up your device to prove functionality after inspection. Keep batteries charged enough to allow this.
    • If you experience confusion or difficulty, ask for a supervisor to help resolve the situation calmly. Don’t become argumentative.
    • Factoring extra security time is wise when traveling with vapes. You may encounter additional questioning or bag searches.
    • Arrive early at the airport in case extensive checks cause delays getting through security screening.

    Travel Stress-Free by Planning Ahead

Flying with your vaping gear is perfectly safe when you take proper precautions. Follow these tips for stress-free travels:

    • Read up on latest airline vape allowances before packing. Regulations change frequently.
    • Have vape batteries clearly marked with watt-hour ratings to show TSA compliance.
    • Use a durable, fire-resistant case designed specifically for transporting vapes. Protection is a must.
    • Only pack enough juice and charged batteries needed for your trip. Extras increase baggage scrutiny.
    • Verify legality and customs rules if visiting a foreign country. Avoid international headaches.
    • Provide ample time at security to account for possible vape inspections.
    • Keep copies of any medical marijuana permissions in case questioned on THC oils.

By planning ahead, packing smart, and cooperating with authorities, vapers can traverse airport security without issue. Flying with your device is perfectly safe when following key safety steps.
