The Florida Ports Council sounded the alarm in a letter to the FDA as more unregulated disposable vapes flood store shelves statewide. These products skirt FDA manufacturing standards and oversight, with some potentially laced with the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl.
Floridians buy more disposable vaping devices than any other state, spending around $363 million annually based on retail data. U.S. Customs has seized numerous sizeable shipments of illegal vapes arriving from China through Florida ports in recent years. New disposable brands and models emerge daily, making it impossible to distinguish lawful compliant devices from hazardous counterfeits.
