A new excise tax on vaping products is set to come into force in Ireland tomorrow, a move designed to curb rising usage, particularly among young people. The levy will add 50 cents per milliliter of e-liquid to both disposable and reusable vapes, a change that retailers anticipate will cause sharp price increases.
Some products are expected to roughly double in cost. An employee at E-Cig Co on Dublin’s Anne Street, Ciarán, noted that customers have been bulk-buying vape juice in anticipation of the price hike. He observed that while the increased cost is prompting some people to consider quitting vaping altogether, there are concerns others might return to smoking traditional cigarettes as a result.
This new tax is part of a broader government strategy to tighten controls on the vaping market. Authorities have confirmed that separate legislation is currently being drafted to implement a ban on single-use disposable vapes and to place tighter restrictions on flavors and packaging. These comprehensive measures are aimed at reducing the appeal of vaping to under-18s and addressing the environmental concerns linked to disposable devices.
