Kentucky has ushered in the new year with significant changes to its laws, including the legalization of medical marijuana, restrictions on vape shops, and mandatory vision tests for driver’s license renewal.
Medical Marijuana Legalized with Regulations
Kentucky has joined the growing list of states that have legalized the use of medical marijuana. However, the state will continue to regulate cultivators and cannabis businesses, requiring patients and caregivers to become cardholders for qualifying medical conditions such as cancer, chronic or severe pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or PTSD.
Vape Shops Face New Limitations
The state has introduced new limits on vape shops, banning the sale of disposable vape products and imposing restrictions on other vape products based on their FDA approval status. The law aims to curb youth vaping by also introducing fines for businesses that sell vapes to anyone under the age of 21.
Mandatory Vision Tests for License Renewal
All Kentuckians must now undergo a vision test when renewing their driver’s license, a law that was passed in 2021. The screenings can be completed at no cost at the license renewal site, or drivers can provide an approval form from a vision exam conducted by a specialist. Drivers who fail the screening will be referred to a vision specialist for another exam before their license can be renewed.
As Kentucky navigates these new laws, businesses and residents alike will need to stay informed and adapt to the changing legal landscape. The vaping industry, in particular, will need to ensure compliance with the new restrictions and work to educate consumers about the importance of responsible use and age verification.
