Mexico City may soon implement a ban on the use and sale of vapes and electronic cigarettes, as local Morena party deputy Alberto Vanegas announced his initiative is advancing and expected to be approved shortly in the capital’s Congress. The primary goal is to align local legislation with a federal law passed last December and to combat the rapidly growing consumption of these products, especially among adolescents.
Speaking at a press conference, Vanegas detailed that his proposal seeks to reform Article 9 of the local constitution and modify Mexico City’s Health Law to sanction all activities related to e-cigarettes and similar devices. He supported his initiative with alarming data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT), which showed that while 1.5% of adults use e-cigarettes, the rate among adolescents aged 11 to 17 nearly doubled in just one year, rising from 2.6% in 2022 to 4.6% in 2023.
Vanegas emphasized that protecting youth health is a legislative priority for his party. “We are going to do this from the Constitution because we see health as a right and not as a commodity,” he declared, explaining that this approach aims to shield the ban from commercial and industry pressures. The initiative is now on the agenda for upcoming sessions in the Mexico City Congress.
