The Health Department of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has declared an immediate ban on the importation and use of all forms of vape products, Health Minister Elias Kapavore announced on May 13th. The decision stems from concerns about the impact of these products on young people, specifically those aged between 11 and 17.
Strict Penalties for Importation, Sale, and Use
Minister Kapavore stated that the ban on e-cigarettes has been signed off and will be formally issued through a gazettal notice. Once published, the ban will take full effect seven days later, rendering any e-cigarette products entering the country illegal under PNG law. The prohibition covers the sale of e-cigarettes and their components.
Individuals found breaching the ban will face a hefty fine of K10,000 (approximately $2,400 USD). Companies violating the ban face even steeper penalties, with fines set at K100,000 (approximately $24,000 USD). This corporate fine could be doubled for entities identified as “tobacco companies.” The swift action underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the perceived risks associated with vaping, particularly among its youth.
