Vietnam has joined a growing list of countries, including Australia, Turkey, Singapore, Mexico, India, Brazil, the Maldives, and Thailand, in banning travelers from bringing vapes into the country. As of January 1, 2025, tourists arriving in Vietnam with vapes face substantial fines under new rules that prohibit the possession, sale, and use of vapes and e-liquids.
Steep Penalties for Violators
Individuals caught using e-cigarettes in Vietnam now face fines of up to 2 million dong (approximately $78.50). Those found importing, trading, transporting, or producing vapes and materials for cigarette alternatives face even harsher penalties, with fines reaching up to 3 billion dong (roughly $117,700) or up to 15 years in prison, depending on the quantity involved.
Global Trend in Vaping Restrictions
Vietnam’s decision to ban vapes aligns with a growing global trend aimed at addressing health concerns related to irreversible lung damage associated with e-cigarette use. Experts advise people who vape to carefully check whether they are allowed to bring their devices with them on holiday before boarding a flight.
Some countries, like Thailand, have particularly strict anti-vaping rules, with penalties for violating e-cigarette laws including steep fines and even imprisonment for up to five years. In Australia, a ban on the import of all types of vapes has been in place since March 2024, unless a special license or permit has been obtained.
Balancing Smoking Cessation and Youth Appeal
While vapes have been shown to help smokers quit tobacco, health officials in many countries express concern about the proven appeal of dessert flavors for vape liquids among younger people who have not yet taken up smoking.
As more countries adopt stringent regulations on vaping products, it is crucial for travelers to stay informed about the specific laws and penalties in their destinations to avoid potentially severe consequences.
