State legislators in Washington aim to protect youth by banning flavored tobacco products statewide, but businesses warn of potential economic repercussions.
Chris Reykdal, Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington and a supporter of the bill, stated that flavored products lure too many young people into dangerous behaviors. The proposed legislation would prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco and nicotine products across the state, including e-cigarettes, pouches, chews, and menthol cigarettes.
Advocates argue that this change is necessary to save lives and protect children, who are using these products more frequently and at younger ages. “We see it now in late elementary school and certainly a major problem in our middle schools,” Reykdal said. According to Flavors Hook Kids Washington, an advocacy group, 8 out of 10 youth tobacco users began with a flavored product.
Businesses Warn of Economic Impact
However, some businesses that rely on flavored tobacco sales, such as Lilac City Vapor, argue that a ban might not be the solution and could have significant economic consequences. Brad Bellinger, the owner of Lilac City Vapor, warned of potential job losses, stating, “If it does go through, that’s 90% of the vape shops and their businesses.”
Bellinger also pointed out that consumers in border cities like Spokane could easily cross into Idaho to purchase these products, leading to a loss of customer base. He expressed concerns that the ban could drive more people towards the black market.
“They’ve already taken the steps to mitigate underage use… it’s just a matter of enforcing it,” Bellinger said, suggesting that enforcement of existing regulations could be a more effective approach.
Ban Set to Take Effect in 2026
If the bill passes, the ban on flavored tobacco products in Washington would go into effect in 2026. Lawmakers hope this legislation will change the trend of youth tobacco use and protect the health of future generations.
