High Smoking Rates Burden NHS Resources
According to recent data, 13.6% of adults in England currently smoke cigarettes. Rates range from 12.2% in the Southeast up to 15% in the North East and Yorkshire. Smoking leads to over 120,000 deaths annually and increases the risk of major diseases like cancer, heart disease, and stroke. This burdens NHS resources to the tune of over £2 billion per year.
Switching to Vaping Could Cut Healthcare Costs
The new study found if just 50% of England’s adult smokers switched to vaping instead, it could reduce hospital admissions by 13%. That translates to NHS savings of £518 million per year by avoiding smoking-related illnesses. In the North East and Yorkshire alone, savings could total £148 million if half of smokers switched to vaping.
Vaping Pose Lower Health Risks Than Smoking
While the long-term health impact of vaping isn’t fully known yet, existing research suggests it poses significantly lower risks than cigarette smoking. Vaping avoids the tar and carbon monoxide responsible for many smoking-related diseases. Experts estimate vaping poses only 5% of the health risks of smoking.

However, vaping isn’t risk-free. And rates of youth vaping have risen sharply, raising public health concerns. Nicotine poses particular risks to adolescent brain development. Strict regulations on vape marketing and access for youth are crucial even as vaping is promoted to adult smokers.
