A new study revealing significant vaping rates among regional Australian teens is sounding alarm bells. With limited cessation resources in rural areas, public health advocates emphasize the urgent need for youth-focused solutions.
High Usage Alignment Between City and Country
The study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, surveyed over 4,000 students aged 14-17 across diverse areas of NSW, Queensland, and Western Australia.
It uncovered a concerning trend – over 25% reported having tried vaping, with 1 in 10 using within the past month. Crucially, rates aligned closely between regional and metropolitan teens.
For lead researcher Dr. Lauren Gardner, several implications are deeply troubling:
“We found the average age of first use to be just 14 years old. This is problematic as vaping can harm healthy development.”
Equally worrying is the parity between city and rural youth adoption. While urban teens have benefited from smoking prevention resources, rural access remains limited. As vaping rises, Dr. Gardner emphasizes unequal support systems.
Risk of Following the Smoking Trajectory
Other experts agree this growing addiction trend must be addressed proactively, especially in underserved areas.
“Given limited tobacco treatment access in regional communities, we must urgently address this vaping issue,” says Professor Megan Passey, who highlights the need for inclusive, localized solutions.
According to Dr. Gardner, “We don’t want vaping to follow the smoking trend. Supporting rural youth to be smoke and vape-free is critical.”
Path Forward – Equitable Action and Research
To make progress, experts recommend research and action focused on equity:
- Dedicated vaping education and cessation initiatives tailored for rural youth
- Involving regional communities directly in solution development
- Funding further studies capturing diverse geographical perspectives
- Closing service access gaps between metro and country areas
As vaping permeates Australian teen culture, public health leaders emphasize meeting this challenge inclusively but urgently, regardless of geography. Prioritizing equitable support can help ensure all youth obtain the resources they need to avoid addiction.
