The Indonesian Ministry of Health is preparing to enforce strict new vaping regulations by July 2026, aligning e-cigarette controls with conventional tobacco laws to protect youth.
- Age Restrictions: A strict ban on vaping for individuals under 21 years old.
- Marketing Limits: Comprehensive controls on advertising, particularly across social media platforms.
- Product Standards: Mandatory graphic health warnings, maximum nicotine caps, and bans on harmful additives.
- Implementation Timeline: Full enforcement of Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024 is scheduled for July 2026.
The Indonesian Ministry of Health has announced preparations to enforce comprehensive e-cigarette regulations starting in July 2026. Under Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024, authorities will regulate vaping products with the same strict provisions applied to conventional tobacco, directly targeting youth access and marketing.
Aji Muhawarman, Director of the Communication and Public Services Office, confirmed the government is currently drafting derivative ministerial guidelines. To prepare the public, health authorities are actively running awareness campaigns regarding the health impacts of e-cigarettes.
Key provisions under the upcoming regulation include:
- Raising the legal age for e-cigarette use to 21.
- Prohibiting the use of vapes in designated smoke-free areas.
- Enforcing maximum nicotine content standards and banning harmful additives.
- Requiring graphic health warnings on all vaping product packaging.
Despite these upcoming measures, medical experts argue that further action may be required. Professor Dr. Faisal Yunus from the University of Indonesia emphasized that regulations must aggressively address easy access, appealing flavors, and youth-targeted marketing.
He noted that global regulatory trends increasingly point toward banning disposable vapes and restricting flavor profiles, highlighting a growing consensus that stricter policies are essential to protect vulnerable adolescent populations from new health risks.
