The Health Commission of Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies is set to vote tomorrow on an initiative aimed at prohibiting electronic cigarettes, vapes, and similar devices nationwide. The proposal, sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum, involves reforming and repealing various provisions of the General Health Law to protect public health, particularly that of young people.
Despite marketing claims of being less harmful, officials warn these devices contain toxic substances and heavy metals. The initiative targets the aggressive marketing strategies directed at youth. To combat illegal sales and smuggling, the draft decree proposes severe penalties, including prison sentences of up to eight years for violations. Ricardo Monreal, president of the Political Coordination Board, emphasized the legislative commitment to protecting Mexicans’ right to health.
