Turkish authorities have prepared new public health regulations to phase out commercial tobacco, culminating in a total ban on all tobacco sales by 2040. The policy introduces immediate restrictions targeting retail visibility, product packaging, and smoking in public areas across the country.
Stricter Retail and Packaging Rules Before 2040
During the transition period leading to the 2040 ban, the government will enforce strict retail rules designed to minimize the market visibility of tobacco:
- Hidden Storage: Retailers must store all tobacco products in closed cabinets that are completely invisible from the outside.
- Digital Age Verification: Vendors must verify buyer age through mandatory electronic verification systems at checkout.
- Standardized Packaging: Cigarette packs will be fully standardized, prohibiting all brand logos, colors, and promotional symbols.
Expanded Smoking Bans in Public and Hospitality Venues
The draft rules also expand Turkey’s smoke-free zones across recreational, educational, and hospitality sectors:
- Outdoor Public Areas: Smoking will be prohibited in playgrounds, public beaches, and open-air sports venues.
- Institutional Facilities: Existing smoking bans around schools, hospitals, public buildings, and places of worship will be expanded.
- Hospitality Sector: Dining venues may only permit smoking in isolated zones that do not exceed 10% of total floor space or a maximum of 20 square meters. Hotels will restrict tobacco use to designated smoking rooms.
