The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has endorsed President Prabowo Subianto’s proposal to implement a total ban on electronic cigarettes. This political backing follows growing evidence of vapes being used to distribute illicit drugs, highlighted by a recent multi-billion rupiah police raid on a drug-laced cartridge factory.
Ahmad Sahroni, Deputy Chairman of Commission III, warned that vape abuse has reached a critical stage. He pointed to a home factory bust in Tangerang, Banten, where police seized 12,000 narcotics-infused cartridges. The operation, which involved foreign nationals, generated an estimated Rp60 billion in revenue.
Sahroni also criticized aggressive social media marketing campaigns for vaping products. He noted that these promotions openly target minors, encouraging underage users to try vaping out of curiosity.
President Prabowo’s directive, delivered on July 23, 2026, during World Drug Day, ordered the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), the Ministry of Health, and other key departments to review vape trade regulations. Prabowo stated he would not hesitate to enforce a total ban if joint studies confirm vapes serve as a gateway for new narcotics.
